Discover more about Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden

The Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden, located in the heart of Old Palo Alto, is a unique and treasured resource for the community. This 2.5-acre property features a historic house and gardens that offer a tranquil escape and a chance to connect with nature. The garden's history dates back to 1902 when Edwin Percy Gamble, son of the Procter & Gamble co-founder, built the house for his family. His daughter, Elizabeth Frances Gamble, resided there for most of her life, developing the gardens and sharing them with the community. In 1971, she bequeathed the estate to the City of Palo Alto. Today, the Gamble Garden is managed by a non-profit horticultural foundation and is open to the public free of charge. The gardens are divided into distinct areas, including a rose garden, cutting garden, formal herb garden, demonstration bed, wisteria garden, and an allée. Visitors can explore California natives, Mediterranean plants, and a Victorian outdoor garden room. The garden also boasts a collection of historic camellias, some dating back to the 17th century. The Gamble House, built in 1902, is a Colonial/Georgian revival style home that serves as the foundation's offices and a horticultural reference library. The Tea House, added in 1948, and the Carriage House, are used for events and classes. Gamble Garden hosts various events and programs throughout the year, including gardening classes, public tours, and seasonal festivals. It also serves as a venue for weddings, meetings, and other special events.
