Historic Blakeley State Park: Where History Meets Nature

Historic Blakeley State Park, nestled on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta near Spanish Fort, Alabama, offers a captivating journey through time and nature. The park encompasses over 2,100 acres and is the largest National Register Historic Site in the eastern United States. The park's history dates back to 1814 with the founding of the town of Blakeley, which briefly rivaled Mobile as a commercial hub. Shipbuilding was an important industry, but the community declined due to economic factors and recurring yellow fever epidemics. By the time of the Civil War, the population had dwindled, but Fort Blakeley was constructed to protect Mobile. The Battle of Fort Blakeley, involving over 16,000 soldiers, occurred on April 9, 1865, the same day as the Confederate surrender. Today, visitors can explore the park's diverse natural environment, home to wildlife including alligators, black bears, turtles, and bald eagles. Over 20 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails wind through the woodlands. Boat tours are available, offering a chance to explore the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and observe its unique ecosystems. The park also offers RV and tent camping, cabins, and an event center.
