Discover more about Sonoma State Historic Park

Sonoma State Historic Park isn't a single, contiguous park, but rather a collection of six historic sites clustered around Sonoma's central plaza, each offering a unique window into California's past. The heart of the park is Mission San Francisco Solano, the last and northernmost of the California missions, founded in 1823. It stands as the only mission established under Mexican rule. Explore the mission's chapel and grounds, and view historical watercolor paintings depicting California's missions. Across the plaza, the Sonoma Barracks once housed Mexican army troops under the command of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. Completed around 1841, the barracks later played a role in the Bear Flag Revolt. Today, exhibits and a video detail Sonoma's history. A gift shop operated by Sonoma Petaluma Parks (SPParks) is also located in the Barracks. A short drive away, Lachryma Montis, General Vallejo's home, offers a glimpse into the life of this influential figure. This estate includes Vallejo's home, gardens, a vineyard, and outbuildings. The Chalet, originally a wine and fruit storage building, now serves as the park's visitor center and museum. Other sites include the Blue Wing Inn, a former gold rush hotel, and the remains of Casa Grande, Vallejo's first home. Together, these sites create a rich tapestry of California's history.
