Discover more about Central Coast Aquarium

Located in the charming coastal town of Avila Beach, the Central Coast Aquarium is a non-profit marine science education center dedicated to cultivating ocean stewardship through education, engagement, and action. Founded as the Port San Luis Marine Institute in 1994, the aquarium has evolved into a valuable community resource, serving over 29,000 visitors and 5,000 students annually. The aquarium features 16 exhibits showcasing over 50 local marine species, including sharks, rays, rockfish, and invertebrates. Visitors can explore interactive touch tanks, witness daily feedings, and participate in swell shark encounters. Knowledgeable docents provide insights into the fascinating adaptations of these creatures and the importance of preserving their coastal habitats. The aquarium also hosts school programs, community events, and science seminars. The Central Coast Aquarium's story began with Russ and Carol Kiessig's dream of sharing the wonders of the ocean. Russ initially lectured on the pier and in The Olde Port Inn before the community received mitigation funds from Union Oil/Unocal to construct a dedicated facility. Though Russ passed away before its completion in 2006, his vision lives on through the aquarium's mission to inspire a love for marine life and an understanding of coastal ecosystems.
