Hornbeck Trailhead: A Historic Hiking Experience

The Hornbeck Trailhead marks the beginning of a popular 4-mile trail that combines natural beauty with historical significance. Located east of Keswick Reservoir near Redding, California, the trail is named after Chuck Hornbeck, who rediscovered the old rail bed and helped develop the trail. The trail itself largely follows the route of the historic narrow gauge Quartz Hill Railway, which was used in the early 1900s to transport quartz to nearby copper smelters. As you traverse the path, imagine the copper-laced trestles that once spanned the area's steep drainages. The relatively even surface and minimal elevation changes make it suitable for a variety of users, including novice mountain bikers, runners, and families with children.
