Discover more about Hoover Tower

Hoover Tower, completed in 1941 to commemorate Stanford University's 50th anniversary, is a towering landmark inspired by the New Cathedral of Salamanca. The tower serves as home to the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, a collection of materials related to war, revolution, and peace, amassed by Herbert Hoover before he became President of the United States. The first nine floors contain library stacks, while the next three house offices. The 14th floor features a carillon with 48 bells and the Lou Henry Hoover Observation Deck, offering visitors sweeping views of the Stanford campus and the Bay Area. On clear days, the San Francisco skyline is visible. The observation deck is named in honor of Lou Henry Hoover, Herbert Hoover's wife and a Stanford alumna. The carillon's original 35 bells were created for the Belgian Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair. With the onset of World War II, the bells were given to Stanford University. The carillon was expanded and tuned in 2001-2002 and now features 48 bells. Visitors can explore exhibits on the ground floor that showcase materials from the Hoover Institution's archival collections.
