Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve, a 3,137-acre park in San Mateo County, is a natural haven along the San Francisco Peninsula. Managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, the preserve features a mix of dense forests and open grasslands, offering visitors a variety of recreational activities and stunning vistas. The preserve is known for its vibrant displays of wildflowers in the spring, with poppies and lupines creating colorful meadows. As the season progresses, gumweed, mules ears, and farewell-to-spring add to the floral tapestry. The area is also home to diverse wildlife, including coyotes, bobcats, bats, and various bird species like the American kestrel and northern harrier. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are popular activities within the preserve. The highest point, Borel Hill at 2,572 feet, provides 360-degree views extending from San Jose to San Francisco and west to the Pacific Ocean. The Bay Area Ridge Trail also runs through Russian Ridge, offering access to breathtaking views. The preserve's history dates back to Mr. Paskey, a Russian immigrant who leased a dairy farm here from the 1920s to 1950. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District began acquiring the land in 1978, preventing its development into subdivisions. Today, Russian Ridge stands as a protected space for both nature and recreation.
