Discover more about Cowles Mountain

Cowles Mountain, reaching 1,593 feet, stands as the highest point within the city limits of San Diego. Located in the San Carlos neighborhood and part of Mission Trails Regional Park, it's a popular hiking destination offering stunning 360-degree views. From the summit, you can see downtown San Diego, Cabrillo National Monument, and even Tijuana on a clear day. The mountain is named after George A. Cowles, a rancher and businessman who settled in the El Cajon Valley in the 1870s. He was known for growing olives and raisins and raising thoroughbred horses. For many years, Cowles Mountain was also known as "S" Mountain. In 1931, students from San Diego State University painted a 400-foot-tall letter "S" on its side. During World War II, the military ordered it covered for security reasons, fearing it could be a reference point for enemy attacks. The most popular trail to the summit is approximately 3 miles round trip. The hike is considered moderately difficult due to its steep incline, with an elevation gain of over 900 feet. The trail consists of rocky and uneven terrain with switchbacks. Despite the challenging climb, the well-maintained path makes it accessible to most hikers. There are also alternative, less crowded routes to the summit, such as the Barker Way Trail and the Big Rock Trail. At the summit, hikers can enjoy panoramic views and find a monument and antennas. The area provides ample space to relax and take in the scenery.
