Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From UC San Diego Central Campus, take the SIO Shuttle, which connects the campus to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Birch Aquarium. Alternatively, MTS Bus Route 30 and NCTD Bus Route 101 also serve the aquarium. From the nearest bus stop (La Jolla Shores Dr & Downwind Way), it's a short 5-minute walk to the aquarium. Single bus fares are typically around $2.50.

  • Walking

    If you are near La Jolla Shores Beach, walk east along La Jolla Shores Drive. Turn left onto Expedition Way. The aquarium will be on your left, about a 15-minute walk. Note that it is an uphill walk.

  • Taxi/Ride-share

    From downtown La Jolla, a taxi or ride-share (Uber/Lyft) to Birch Aquarium will cost approximately $15-$25, depending on traffic and demand. The ride is about 10-15 minutes.

  • Driving

    From I-5, exit at La Jolla Village Drive and head west. Turn left onto Torrey Pines Road, then left onto La Jolla Shores Drive. Turn left onto Expedition Way. The aquarium will be on your left. Parking is free for 3 hours in the Birch Aquarium lot. Additional parking may be available on Expedition Way. Oversized vehicles are not permitted in the parking area.

Don't miss the popular Giant Kelp Forest, a 70,000-gallon habitat with sharks, Garibaldi, and moray eels. Tide Pool Plaza offers hands-on experiences with local tide pool animals, while the Seadragons & Seahorses exhibit highlights the aquarium's leadership in seahorse propagation and conservation. The Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins exhibit is the only place on the West Coast where you can see the world's smallest penguin species.
