Discover more about Sea Lion Viewing Area

The Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39 provides a front-row seat to the captivating lives of California sea lions. Since 1989, these marine mammals have transformed Pier 39's K-Dock into a lively, barking spectacle that delights visitors from around the globe. The story began in the aftermath of the Loma Prieta earthquake when the marina's docks were being refurbished, creating open spaces that attracted a few sea lions. By January 1990, their numbers exploded to over 150, and they have remained a fixture ever since. Today, the pier provides a safe space, free from natural predators, where they can rest, socialize, and feed on the abundant local anchovies and sardines. While the sea lion population fluctuates with the seasons and food availability, recent counts have reached record highs, with over 1,100 individuals crowding the docks. The majority of these sea lions are males, who migrate to Pier 39 after the breeding season. Visitors can observe these charismatic creatures sunbathing, playfully jostling for space, and engaging in loud, boisterous barking, creating an unforgettable sensory experience. The viewing area offers several vantage points to witness the sea lions' antics, and a live webcam provides a virtual window into their daily lives.
