Discover more about War Memorial Opera House

Located in San Francisco's Civic Center, the War Memorial Opera House stands as a monument to the city's vibrant arts scene and a tribute to those who served in World War I. Designed by Arthur Brown Jr. and G. Albert Lansburgh, the 3,146-seat theater opened in 1932 and is one of the last Beaux-Arts structures built in the United States. Its architecture features a classic Roman Doric order, inspired by the Louvre Colonnade. Inside, visitors are greeted by a grand lobby with a 38-foot ceiling and ornate fixtures. The main hall boasts a high barrel-vaulted and coffered ceiling, plush velvet seats, and state-of-the-art technology. The Opera House has undergone renovations, including a seismic retrofit in 1997, to ensure its preservation for future generations. Beyond its architectural beauty, the War Memorial Opera House holds a significant place in history. In 1945, it hosted the first assembly of the newly formed United Nations, and in 1951, it was the site of the ceremony where the United States restored Japanese sovereignty. Today, the Opera House continues to host world-class opera and ballet performances, as well as other events.
