    From Union Square, walk towards Powell Street. Head towards the east side of the park. Turn left and walk north for two blocks until you reach the intersection of Powell and Market Streets. The Sister Cities of San Francisco Sign is located on the corner.

Located at the bustling intersection of Powell and Market Streets, the Sister Cities of San Francisco Sign is a vibrant monument that celebrates San Francisco's global partnerships. This unique art installation features signs pointing in the direction of each of San Francisco's sister cities, along with the approximate mileage to each city. The Sister Cities program was established in 1956 to foster connections and cultural understanding between cities across the globe. San Francisco's first sister city was Osaka, Japan, established in 1957. Over the years, San Francisco has formed sister city relationships with numerous cities around the world, including Sydney, Australia; Taipei, Taiwan; Assisi, Italy; Haifa, Israel; Seoul, South Korea; Shanghai, China; Manila, Philippines; Cork, Ireland; and Paris, France. The sign serves as a reminder of the importance of international friendship and cooperation, embodying the welcoming spirit of San Francisco. It was unveiled in Hallidie Plaza on June 28, 2018, as a joint effort between the Mayor's Office of Protocol, the Department of Public Works, the SFMTA, and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. The sign is ordered by official designation, leaving room to accommodate new relationships in the future.
