Discover more about Sea Lion Viewing Area

The Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39 provides a front-row seat to the lively world of California sea lions. Since 1990, these playful pinnipeds have charmed visitors with their amusing antics and loud vocalizations. What began as a small group has grown into a bustling colony, with numbers fluctuating seasonally but often reaching hundreds, and sometimes over a thousand. The sea lions first arrived at Pier 39 shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989. With the removal of boats for dock repairs, the sea lions found an inviting, safe haven. The availability of food, lack of predators, and protected environment made Pier 39 an ideal spot for them to haul out. Initially, there were discussions about removing them, but it was ultimately decided to let them stay. Today, the sea lions are a major attraction, with their population peaking in the winter months. While many head south to breeding grounds near the Channel Islands in the summer, a few remain year-round. The majority of the sea lions at Pier 39 are males, who migrate further north after breeding season. The barks of the sea lions help them communicate and establish dominance. Visitors can learn more about these fascinating creatures at the Sea Lion Center, which offers educational information and insights into their behavior.
