Point Bonita Lighthouse: A Beacon at the Golden Gate

Point Bonita Lighthouse, a historic sentinel at the Golden Gate, has been a crucial navigational aid since its establishment in 1855. As the third lighthouse on the West Coast, it initially stood on a hill 306 feet above sea level. However, the location proved problematic due to the region's characteristic high fog, which often obscured the light. In 1877, the lighthouse was relocated to its current position, a lower elevation of 124 feet above sea level at the tip of Point Bonita. This move required the construction of a 118-foot tunnel, hand-carved through solid rock. Today, visitors can walk through this tunnel to reach a suspension bridge, the only lighthouse in the United States accessible this way, adding to the unique experience. The lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Park Service provides public access. The half-mile trail to the lighthouse offers dramatic coastal scenery, including views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco skyline, and marine life such as harbor seals and whales. The lighthouse itself features a second-order Fresnel lens, which emits a light visible for 18 nautical miles. A fog signal, essential in the frequently foggy conditions, emits two blasts every 30 seconds.
