Sutro Heights Park, a hidden gem in San Francisco's Outer Richmond District, invites visitors to step back in time and enjoy breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. This 18-acre park sits atop the bluffs above the Cliff House , on the site of what was once the Sutro Heights estate of Adolph Sutro , a Comstock Lode silver baron, land owner/developer, and mayor of San Francisco.
In 1881, Sutro purchased 22 acres of undeveloped land and built his mansion, transforming the area into an elaborate public garden. Inspired by European aesthetics , Sutro spent over a million dollars to recreate an Italian-style garden. It was filled with fountains, statues, flower beds, hedge mazes, and a glass conservatory. To provide garden decorations, Sutro imported over 200 concrete replicas of Greek and Roman statuary from Belgium.
Sutro opened his estate's gardens to the public in 1885, charging a dime for entry. The grounds were used for public events, such as an 1895 production of Shakespeare's “As You Like It,” which drew a crowd of 5,000. The Sutro family donated the estate to the City of San Francisco in 1938. In 1939, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) demolished the residence.
Today, visitors can explore the park's historic pathways, discover the remains of the stone parapet, and enjoy panoramic views of Ocean Beach, Seal Rocks, and the Golden Gate. The park offers a peaceful retreat with a touch of history, making it a unique destination in San Francisco.

Getting There
Public Transport
From downtown San Francisco, take the 38 Geary or 38R bus to the 48th Avenue and Point Lobos Avenue stop. Walk a short distance west on Point Lobos Avenue towards the ocean. The main entrance to Sutro Heights Park, marked by two lion statues, will be on your left. A single ride on Muni costs $3.00, or $2.50 if using the MuniMobile app.
Walking
If you are near the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center, walk across Point Lobos Avenue to the park entrance. The entrance is located between the two parking lots on Point Lobos Drive, just below 48th Avenue. Head down the path to the stone lions guarding the entrance. Be aware that the trail leading from the west parking lot to Sutro Heights is extremely steep.
Taxi/Ride-share
Request a ride to 846 Point Lobos Avenue, San Francisco. This will bring you to the vicinity of the park entrance. From there, it is a short walk to the park. A ride from Fisherman's Wharf will cost approximately $25-$35, depending on traffic.
Parking
There are two parking lots located opposite the entrance to the park on Point Lobos Drive. The smaller lot on the south side of the street often fills up quickly. The larger lot across the street, near the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center, is a good alternative. Parking is free. Street parking is also available along 48th Avenue.
