Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Monarch Wilderness.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car, start by heading to the nearest major city, such as Fresno, CA. From Fresno, take CA-41 N towards Yosemite. Merge onto CA-99 N and then take exit 132B for CA-198 E towards Visalia. Continue on CA-198 E until you reach the junction with CA-65 N. Take CA-65 N until you reach Porterville, then follow the signs for CA-190 E. Drive on CA-190 E until you reach the entrance to Sequoia National Park. From there, follow the signs towards the Monarch Wilderness area. Note that parking fees may apply within the national parks, typically around $30 for a vehicle.
Public Transportation
If you're using public transportation, start by taking a Greyhound or other bus service to Visalia, CA. From Visalia, you can catch a local bus service (such as the Visalia Transit) to Porterville. Once in Porterville, you may need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to the entrance of the Sequoia National Park, as public transport does not directly access the Monarch Wilderness area. Be sure to check the bus schedules ahead of time, as they may not run frequently. Costs for Greyhound tickets vary, but you should budget around $30-$50 for the whole trip. Taxi or rideshare fares from Porterville to the park can range from $30 to $50 depending on distance and availability.
Hiking
For those who are already in the surrounding areas and wish to hike into Monarch Wilderness, ensure you have a trail map and proper gear. From the nearest trailhead, which is typically around the entrance of Sequoia National Park, follow established trails leading into the wilderness. Always check the trail conditions and weather forecasts, and let someone know your plans before setting off.
