Discover more about Mission San Juan Capistrano, Landmark, Chapel, Museum and Gardens

Mission San Juan Capistrano, a historic landmark and museum, stands as a testament to California's rich past. Founded on November 1, 1776, by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, it was the seventh of 21 missions established in California. The Mission played a crucial role in expanding Spain's territorial boundaries and spreading Christianity to the native Acjachemen people. The mission quickly became a self-sufficient community, serving as a center for agriculture, industry, education, and religion. The mission is home to the oldest building in California still in use, the Serra Chapel, built in 1782. It is the only extant structure where it has been documented that Junipero Serra celebrated Mass. The Mission is also known for the annual return of the cliff swallows, who arrive in the spring and depart when the weather cools. Visitors can explore the grounds, which include lush gardens, koi-filled fountains, museum rooms, and original adobe buildings. The iconic bell wall still features a daily bell-ringing tradition honoring the legacy of Saint Junipero Serra. Exhibits showcase historic and religious artifacts, as well as rare paintings. Audio tours are available in multiple languages, offering insights into the Mission's history and cultural significance. Though damaged over the years by natural disasters, the Mission has undergone restoration efforts since 1910. Today, it serves as a museum and a place of inspiration and education, welcoming over 300,000 visitors each year.
