Discover more about Ta Prohm Temple

Ta Prohm, originally known as Rajavihara, was built in 1186 AD by King Jayavarman VII as a Buddhist monastery and university dedicated to his mother. The temple was designed to represent Prajnaparamita, the personification of wisdom. Unlike other Angkor temples that have been largely restored, Ta Prohm has been intentionally left in a state of semi-ruin, with massive trees and vegetation growing amongst the stones, creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Ta Prohm once housed over 12,500 people, including high priests, officials, and dancers, with services and supplies provided by 80,000 villagers. The temple's outer wall measured 1000m by 600m, enclosing a complex of halls, courtyards, and sanctuaries adorned with intricate carvings. Two of the four original entrance buildings, or gopuras, are accessible to visitors, featuring face towers similar to those at Bayon Temple. Following the decline of the Khmer Empire, Ta Prohm was abandoned and gradually reclaimed by the jungle. The roots of silk-cotton and strangler fig trees twisted through the stone, creating the hauntingly beautiful ruins that exist today. This integration of nature and architecture has made Ta Prohm one of the most popular temples in Angkor, drawing visitors who seek to witness the power and beauty of nature's embrace. Ta Prohm's fame was further amplified by its appearance in the movie "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" in 2001, solidifying its place in popular culture as the "Tomb Raider Temple". Today, restoration efforts are focused on stabilizing the temple while preserving its unique aesthetic, ensuring that future generations can experience the wonder of Ta Prohm.
