Discover more about Caribou Plain - UNESCO Fundy Biosphere Reserve Amazing Place

Caribou Plain, an 'Amazing Place' within the UNESCO Fundy Biosphere Reserve, presents a tranquil escape into nature. Located in Alma Parish, New Brunswick, this hiking area offers a diverse landscape of forests, streams, and bogs. The area was once home to herds of woodland caribou until 1907. The main trail is a 3.4 km loop that takes about 1.5 hours to complete, with a shorter 0.5 km boardwalk loop that is wheelchair accessible. Interpretive signs provide insights into the area's history, landscape, and wildlife. Visitors can explore mixed forests, softwood forests, bogs, and hardwood forests. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as white-tailed deer and moose. The trail leads to lookout platforms on Caribou Lake, a small lake surrounded by a mossy bog. The bog is a unique ecosystem that has been growing for over 8,000 years. It's a giant mound of sodden peat, four meters deep in some spots. Visitors are advised to stay on the boardwalk due to the presence of flarks, which are rotten spots in the bog that can be dangerous.
