Discover more about Sir Sandford Fleming Memorial Tower

The Sir Sandford Fleming Memorial Tower, often called the Dingle Tower, is located within Sir Sandford Fleming Park, also known as Dingle Park, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The park was donated to the city by Sir Sandford Fleming in 1908. Fleming was a Scottish-Canadian engineer and inventor best known for his role in establishing standard time zones. The tower itself was erected between 1908 and 1912 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of representative government in Nova Scotia in 1758, the first British colony to achieve this milestone. Fleming, a staunch believer in the British Empire, also intended the tower to celebrate the development of parliamentary institutions within the Empire. The tower's architecture blends High Victorian and Edwardian Classical styles, symbolizing Canada's evolving relationship with Britain. The 34-meter tower, designed by architects Sidney Dumaresq and Andrew R. Cobb, features a solid rusticated base and an upper story adorned with Palladian windows. Inside, plaques and stones from across the British Empire were placed. Two bronze lions, designed by British sculptor Albert Bruce-Joy, flank the entrance, reminiscent of those at Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the Northwest Arm and the surrounding area. The park also offers walking trails, a playground, and a sandy beach, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
