Discover more about Snug Harbour Range Rear Lighthouse

The Snug Harbour Range Rear Lighthouse, situated on the southern tip of Snug Island in Georgian Bay, has been a guiding beacon since 1894. Serving as the rear range light in conjunction with the now absent front light on Walton Island, it played a crucial role in directing marine traffic safely into Snug Harbour and towards Parry Sound. The lighthouse is a distinctive one-and-a-half storey dwelling with a square, tapered tower rising from the center of its roof. This design reflects a practical, vernacular approach to lighthouse construction, common in remote locations. The white siding, red roof, and black vertical stripe on the tower create a recognizable day marker. Over the years, the lighthouse has seen changes, including the addition of a kitchen and electrification in 1956. In 2007, the Snug Harbour Range Rear Lighthouse was declared a Recognized Federal Heritage Building, acknowledging its architectural value and historical significance. In 2016, it was further recognized as a heritage lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. While the grounds and tower are currently closed to the public, the lighthouse can be viewed by boat, offering a glimpse into the region's maritime past.
