Discover more about Iowa Islamic Heritage Mother Mosque of America (Islamic Cultural & Heritage Center

The Iowa Islamic Heritage Mother Mosque of America, formerly known as The Rose of Fraternity Lodge, is a significant landmark in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Completed in 1934, it holds the distinction of being the oldest standing purpose-built mosque in the United States. This humble building represents the rich history of Islam in America and the enduring spirit of a community of immigrants. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, immigrants from areas that are now Lebanon and Syria came to the United States seeking economic opportunities and religious freedom. Like other immigrant communities, they desired a place to practice their faith and build a communal identity. These early Muslim settlers pooled their resources and constructed the mosque, which at the time was called the Moslem Temple. The mosque served as a religious and social center, hosting weddings, funerals, celebrations, and cultural gatherings. Over time, the community outgrew the original mosque, and in 1971, a larger mosque, the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids, was built. The Mother Mosque was sold and fell into disrepair. However, its historical and symbolic value was not forgotten. In the early 1990s, a campaign led by Imam Taha Tawil and community leaders successfully repurchased and restored the building. It was rededicated in 1992 and renamed the Mother Mosque of America. Today, the Mother Mosque stands as a cultural center and a reminder of the early Muslim community in the United States. It is listed on the Iowa State Historical Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can explore the mosque's history, admire its architecture, and learn about the contributions of Muslims to American society.
