Discover more about The Arboretum, University of Guelph

The University of Guelph Arboretum, a sprawling 400-acre sanctuary, serves as a dynamic interface between people and nature. Established in 1970, the Arboretum has evolved into a vital resource for research, teaching, and community engagement. It's a place where visitors can immerse themselves in diverse plant collections, explore themed gardens, and wander through natural woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. The Arboretum's history began in the 1880s with the Ontario Agricultural College's initial collection of woody plants. Over time, this evolved into a dedicated arboretum, officially designated in 1970. Today, it boasts over 40 plant collections, featuring both native and introduced species. These collections include the World of Trees, Native Trees of Ontario, and specialized groupings of roses, lilacs, and dwarf conifers. The Arboretum also features several themed gardens, including the Gosling Wildlife Gardens, the David G. Porter Memorial Japanese Garden, the Edna and Frank C. Miller English Garden, and the Italian Garden. These gardens offer diverse horticultural displays and demonstrate ecologically friendly landscaping methods. Trails like the Ivey Trail and Trillium Trail wind through the Arboretum, providing access to its various collections and natural areas. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Arboretum plays a crucial role in conservation. Its gene bank helps preserve the genetic diversity of Ontario's rare woody plants, contributing to future restoration efforts. The Arboretum also hosts educational programs, workshops, and special events for schoolchildren, families, and other groups. It's a popular venue for weddings and memorial services as well. Open year-round from dawn to dusk, the Arboretum welcomes approximately 100,000 visitors annually.
