  • The reserve is open from November to April; plan your visit accordingly.
  • Public transportation only goes as far as Minas del Prado, so arrange for further transport or be prepared to hike or bike.
  • The last 7 kilometers of the access road are very rough and require a 4x4 vehicle or travel by foot, bicycle, or horseback.
  • There is no cell phone signal in the reserve, so inform someone of your plans and expected return time.

Getting There

  • Driving

    From Chillán, take the Ruta Chillán-Coihueco-Minas del Prado for approximately 70 km (2.5 hours). Public transportation is available to Minas del Prado. From Minas del Prado, continue southeast on the forest road towards the reserve. The final 7 km are a challenging, unpaved mountain road, best suited for 4x4 vehicles, bicycles, or hiking. Drive slowly and carefully due to the narrow, winding road and potential for logging truck traffic. There are no tolls. Parking is available at the reserve entrance. Limited parking is available, especially during peak season.

  • Public Transport & Hiking

    Take a bus from Chillán to Coihueco, and then another bus from Coihueco to Minas del Prado. From Minas del Prado, the reserve is approximately 18 km away. The first 11km from Coihueco to Minas del Prado are on gravel road. From Minas del Prado, follow the forest road southeast towards the reserve. The final 7 km are a challenging, unpaved mountain road, which must be travelled by foot or bicycle. Consider arranging transport from Minas del Prado to the start of the 4x4 road to shorten the walking distance. Bus fares from Chillán to Coihueco are approximately $2,000 CLP, and from Coihueco to Minas del Prado, approximately $1,500 CLP.
