Discover more about Ascensor Reina Victoria

Ascensor Reina Victoria is more than just a mode of transportation; it's a cherished emblem of Valparaíso's rich history and vibrant culture. This funicular railway, operating since the late 19th century, provides a remarkable ascent up the steep hills of Cerro Alegre, one of the city's most picturesque neighborhoods. As you ride, you're treated to sweeping views of the colorful houses adorning the hillsides, the bustling port, and the vast Pacific Ocean. The experience offers a glimpse into the historical significance of this innovative transport system, a lifeline for residents for generations. The ride is approximately five minutes long, but the memories can last a lifetime. Visitors appreciate the well-preserved architecture surrounding the station, with charming cafés, art galleries, and local shops reflecting Valparaíso's artistic spirit. The funicular operates daily from 8 AM to 9 PM. Be sure to have your camera ready, as the views from the top are breathtaking, and the vibrant street art adorning the walls throughout the journey adds to the unique charm of this coastal gem. Named in homage to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, who passed away in 1901, this elevator endured structural challenges posed by earthquakes in 1971 and 1985. Following these events, the elevator underwent a period of closure for extensive renovations, with the revitalization efforts completed in 1988. Despite having the shortest route among the port's elevators, the Reina Victoria Elevator boasts the steepest incline. The vertical route spans 40 meters, ascending to a height of 35 meters, featuring a remarkable slope of 52 degrees. The upper station terminates in a charming square, revamped in 2014 and christened Lukas Square in honor of the Italian-born caricaturist Lukas (Renzo Pecchenino). This square is a vibrant canvas for street art, adorned by the graffiti artists Unkolordistinto (Cynthia Aguilera, known as Cines) and Sammy Espinoza (Jekse or Jehkse), who brought to life 120 characters from the Bestiario del Reyno de Chile, adorning every wall of the square with their imaginative creations.
