Cocora Valley: Home of the Wax Palm

Cocora Valley, a stunning extension of Los Nevados National Park, is best known as the home of Colombia's national tree, the Quindío wax palm. These incredibly tall, endangered palms dramatically dot the landscape, creating a surreal and unforgettable experience. Located near the charming colonial town of Salento in the heart of Colombia's coffee region, the valley offers a variety of activities for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Hiking is a must-do activity, with trails ranging from easy strolls through the palm forests to challenging loops that wind through cloud forests and farmlands. The most popular option is a 12km loop that takes 4-5 hours to complete, offering diverse scenery and the chance to spot local flora and fauna. For a shorter experience, visitors can opt for a 4.2km out-and-back trail focusing on the most iconic wax palm groves. Along the trails, you'll encounter rickety bridges, small streams, and possibly some mud, especially during the rainy season. Some trails have entrance fees, so it's good to have cash. Beyond hiking, horseback riding provides another excellent way to explore the valley's rolling green hills and coffee plantations. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for hummingbirds and even condors soaring overhead.
