Independencia Park, also known as Parque de la Independencia, serves as the main plaza in Socorro, Santander, a town pivotal in Colombia's fight for independence. Founded in 1681, Socorro was the epicenter of the Comuneros Revolt in 1781, a precursor to the country's independence movement.
The park itself is a beautiful space adorned with tall palm trees and monuments commemorating key figures in Colombian history. A central monument honors José Antonio Galán, a hero of the Comuneros Revolution, depicted wielding a sword. In the northeast corner, a monument recognizes Antonia Santos, a revolutionary leader executed for her role in the independence struggle. It is said that the statue of Antonia Santos is located where she was shot to death on July 28, 1819.

Independencia Park is centrally located in Socorro and easily accessible on foot from most parts of the town. From the Terminal de Socorro, walk approximately 10-15 minutes north along Carrera 17, then turn left on Calle 13. The park will be on your left. No costs are involved.

Local buses circulate throughout Socorro. You can take any bus that goes along Carrera 17 or Calle 16 and ask the driver to drop you off near Parque de la Independencia. Bus fares are typically around COP1,500 for a short trip. From there, it's a short walk to the park.
