Plazoleta Chorro de Quevedo: Bogotá's Bohemian Heart

Plazoleta Chorro de Quevedo, nestled in the heart of Bogotá's historic La Candelaria district, is more than just a charming square; it's a place where the city's story began. Legend has it that this is where Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada established a military garrison before officially founding Bogotá on August 6, 1538. Some historians also believe that the Zipa, chief of the Muisca tribe, used this elevated location to survey the Bogotá savanna. In 1832, Father Agustino Quevedo acquired the site and installed a public water fountain, giving the square its name. Although the original fountain was destroyed in 1896, it was reconstructed in 1969 based on old images. Today, a modest fountain adds to the square's charm. Plazoleta Chorro de Quevedo is framed by colonial and early 20th-century buildings, creating a picturesque backdrop for the square's lively atmosphere. Calle del Embudo, a narrow, cobblestone street, leads to the plaza, adding to its unique character. The area is a magnet for street artists and university students, making it a hub of creativity and youthful energy. On Friday afternoons, the square comes alive with Spanish storytelling sessions.
