Discover more about Aspen mountain

Aspen Mountain, affectionately called Ajax by locals, stands as a testament to Aspen's rich ski history and continues to be a premier destination for ski enthusiasts. Founded in 1946 by Walter Paepcke and 10th Mountain Division veterans, Aspen Mountain was the first venture of the Aspen Skiing Company. Its development transformed Aspen from a quiet mining town into a world-renowned resort. Aspen Mountain rises dramatically from the heart of downtown Aspen, offering over 675 acres of skiable terrain. Known for its challenging runs, the mountain caters primarily to intermediate and expert skiers, with no green or beginner runs available. The Silver Queen Gondola, installed in 1986, provides access to the summit with a vertical rise of 3,267 feet, offering panoramic views of the Elk Mountains and the Roaring Fork Valley. Beyond skiing, Aspen Mountain offers a variety of activities. During the summer, visitors can enjoy hiking, sightseeing, and dining at the Sundeck restaurant. Special events like live music on weekends and yoga classes add to the mountain's appeal. The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies also provides daily snowshoe tours from the top of the gondola. Aspen Mountain's legacy is deeply intertwined with the town's cultural and intellectual growth. Hosting the 1950 FIS World Championships marked a significant milestone as the first event held outside of Europe. Today, Aspen Mountain continues to blend world-class skiing with arts and culture, making it a unique destination.
