In its heyday during the 1890s, it accounted for approximately one-fifth of the world's silver output. The mine is also renowned for the discovery of a massive silver nugget weighing over 1,840 pounds. Today, the Smuggler Mine offers guided tours that take visitors 1,200 feet into the depths of the mine. Equipped with hard hats and miner's lights, explore original shafts and tunnels while learning about 19th-century mining techniques. Knowledgeable guides share stories of the silver boom and the lives of the miners who shaped the region. The tours, which last about 1.5 hours, provide a glimpse into Aspen's rich mining heritage. The Smuggler Mine is open from May to October, with tours available at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm. The tour is considered a mild adventure suitable for the whole family, though the minimum age is 6 years old. Visitors are advised to wear warm clothes and closed-toe shoes.
