Discover more about Black Canyon Of The Gunnison

The South Rim Visitor Center serves as the gateway to exploring the awe-inspiring Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Here, you can delve into the canyon's formation, discover its unique ecosystem, and learn about the human history etched into its rugged landscape. The canyon itself is a product of the Gunnison River, which has been carving through the area for two million years. The canyon walls expose some of the oldest rock in North America. The extreme steepness and depth of the canyon result in very little sunlight reaching the bottom, hence the name 'Black Canyon'. At the visitor center, you can gather information, explore exhibits, and watch a park film. Rangers are available to answer questions and provide guidance. Several hiking trails begin near the visitor center, offering varying levels of difficulty and spectacular views. The Rim Rock Nature Trail is a relatively easy, family-friendly option, while the Oak Flat Loop Trail provides a slightly more challenging descent into the canyon. For experienced hikers, inner canyon routes are available, but require a permit and a high level of fitness. The South Rim Road offers a scenic drive with multiple overlooks, each providing a unique perspective of the canyon. Don't miss the iconic viewpoints at Chasm View, Painted Wall, and Pulpit Rock. The South Rim is also known for its dark skies, making it an ideal location for stargazing.
