Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start at the South Rim Visitor Center located at 9800 CO-347, Montrose, CO 81401. From here, you can access various viewpoints and trails. To reach the Canyon's Edge, take the South Rim Road which will lead you to several breathtaking overlooks such as Gunnison Point and Chasm View. Make sure to follow the signs for the overlooks as each offers a unique perspective of the canyon. The South Rim Road is open year-round, but check for any seasonal closures.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, take a Greyhound or local bus service to Montrose, CO. From the Montrose bus station, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service as there are no direct public transport options to the park. The drive from Montrose to the Black Canyon South Rim Visitor Center is approximately 30 minutes (about 19 miles). It is advisable to check in advance for taxi or rideshare availability, as they may not always be readily available.

• Biking

  For the adventurous, biking from Montrose to the Black Canyon is a possibility, though it is recommended only for experienced cyclists due to the steep terrain. You can bike along the CO-347 highway directly to the South Rim Visitor Center. Make sure to wear a helmet and be cautious of traffic. The ride offers scenic views, but it is a strenuous route, so prepare accordingly.

• Walking/Hiking

  Once you are within the park, many of the viewpoints and trails are accessible by walking. The Rim Rock Trail is an excellent option for those who wish to explore the canyon on foot. It’s a relatively easy hike that offers stunning views of the canyon walls. Ensure you have appropriate footwear and carry enough water, as facilities within the park are limited.
