    Discover more about Sprague Lake

Sprague Lake, located in Rocky Mountain National Park, is a serene and accessible destination for visitors of all abilities. The lake, named after Abner Sprague, a pioneer who established a homestead in the area in 1874, offers stunning panoramic views of the Continental Divide, including Half Mountain, Thatchtop Mountain, Taylor Peak, Otis Peak, Hallett Peak, Flattop Mountain, and Notchtop Mountain. Sprague created the lake to enhance his guest lodge, which hosted dude ranching, hunting, and fishing activities. He later dammed the far end of the lake to improve fishing conditions. The area became part of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915. Today, the Sprague Hotel no longer exists, but the lake remains a popular spot for recreation and enjoying nature. The Sprague Lake Loop is an easy, 0.75 to 0.9-mile trail that encircles the lake. The trail is mostly flat with a hard-packed gravel surface, making it wheelchair accessible and suitable for families with small children. Benches are placed along the trail, offering visitors a chance to relax and soak in the scenery. The lake is also a popular spot for fishing, with brook, brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout inhabiting its waters. Visitors can enjoy a picnic at the Sprague Lake Picnic Area, which has tables, grills, and restrooms. The area is also a prime location for wildlife viewing, with opportunities to spot moose and other animals. Sprague Lake is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the mountains reflect in the still waters.
