Discover more about Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Located between Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs, this 1,474-acre park showcases a series of parallel ridges and eroded canyons sculpted from vibrant red sandstone. These formations are part of the Fountain Formation, remnants of the Ancestral Rocky Mountains, dating back millions of years. Evidence suggests human activity in the area as far back as 7000 B.C., with various Native American tribes, including the Jicarilla Apache and the Utes, utilizing the canyon's resources. In the late 1800s, the area was heavily industrialized, with quarries extracting gypsum, building sand, and sandstone. The Kenmuir Quarry was a major operation, supplying materials for the construction of Old Colorado City and surrounding communities. The Colorado-Philadelphia Company Mill refined gold ore from Cripple Creek, becoming the largest mill of its kind in the U.S. for a time. After periods of industrial use and failed development plans, the City of Colorado Springs purchased the property in 2003, transforming it into a public open space. Today, Red Rock Canyon Open Space offers a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, rock climbing (permit required), and horseback riding. There are approximately 10 miles of trails within the park, with connections to the Intemann Trail and Section 16. Visitors can explore trails of varying difficulty, enjoy off-leash dog areas, and take in panoramic views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range. The park also features a free-ride bike park and picnic areas.
