Discover more about Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance, located on the western edge of Colorado Springs. This 1,474-acre park showcases a series of parallel ridges and eroded canyons, with the same striking sandstone rocks found in the nearby Garden of the Gods. Archaeological evidence suggests that Red Rock Canyon was inhabited as early as 7000 B.C.. Various American Indian tribes, including the Jicarilla Apache and the Utes, found the area ideal for settlement due to its proximity to Fountain Creek and abundant wildlife. In the late 1800s, the canyon became a hub for quarrying operations. Gypsum, building sand, and sandstone blocks were extracted from the area, providing materials for the construction of Old Colorado City and surrounding communities. The Kenmuir Quarry was a major operation, running seven days a week to meet the high demand. The Colorado-Philadelphia Company Mill refined ore shipped by train from the gold mines in Cripple Creek. After the decline of the quarrying industry, John George Bock purchased the property in the 1920s and 1930s. His sons envisioned a resort community, but their plans were never fully realized. In 2003, the City of Colorado Springs acquired the land and transformed it into the Red Rock Canyon Open Space. Today, visitors can explore over 10 miles of trails that wind through the canyons and ridges. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are popular activities, and technical rock climbing is permitted with a permit obtained from the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center. The park also features off-leash dog loops, a free-ride bike park, and picnic areas. Popular trails include the Mesa/Greenlee loop, Roundup Trail, and Quarry Pass Trail. Red Rock Canyon Open Space provides stunning views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range.
