Lakeside Amusement Park: A Nostalgic Denver Treasure

Lakeside Amusement Park, a historic landmark in Lakeside, Colorado, adjacent to Denver, has been providing affordable family fun since 1908. Originally known as “The White City,” the park was inspired by the dazzling lights and Beaux-Arts architecture of the Chicago Columbian Exposition. Today, it stands as the oldest amusement park in Colorado still operating in its original location and the only remaining 'White City' park in the United States. Founded by Denver brewer Adolph Zang, Lakeside Park quickly became a popular destination, easily accessible by streetcar. In 1935, Benjamin Krasner acquired the park, adding neon lighting and color to enhance its family-friendly appeal. Many of the Art Deco and Modern elements were designed by Richard L. Crowther, known for his use of bright neon lights. The park features a variety of rides for all ages, including the iconic Cyclone roller coaster, built in 1940, and the Wild Chipmunk. The Lakeshore Railroad, a miniature railway with trains from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, offers a scenic ride around the lake. While some original attractions like the swimming beach, casino, and theater are no longer in operation, the park retains its nostalgic charm with classic rides and picturesque mountain views. Visitors can enjoy a range of amusement park fare, and the park often features live music and street performers. The Tower of Jewels remains a prominent landmark, though the original casino building and Riviera nightclub are now used for storage. Lakeside's enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport visitors to a bygone era, offering a unique blend of history and amusement park excitement.
