The Historic Elitch Carousel Dome stands as a nostalgic reminder of Denver's rich entertainment history. Originally built in 1890 as part of Elitch Gardens, a family-owned botanic garden, amusement park, and theater, the park quickly became a popular destination with the addition of a zoo, rides, and performances.The carousel, housed in the stylized pavilion erected in 1926, was a centerpiece of the amusement park at its original location on 38th and Tennyson. The carousel operated in this location from 1928 to 1995, when the park moved to its current downtown location. The carousel itself, PTC #51, was built between 1925-1928 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. It featured 67 horses, including 44 jumping horses and 2 Roman chariots.Today, the dome still stands, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. While the carousel is no longer present, the architectural marvel of the dome captures the essence of early 20th-century entertainment. The surrounding area has been redeveloped into the Highlands' Garden Village, but the dome and the Elitch Theatre remain as historical landmarks. The Elitch Theatre, built in 1890, hosted numerous stars, including Grace Kelly and Vincent Price, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The plaza outside the theater serves as an outdoor performing space and event venue.Visiting the Historic Elitch Carousel Dome offers a unique blend of entertainment and cultural education.
