Sprague Lake, located within Rocky Mountain National Park, offers visitors an accessible and stunning natural experience. The lake is named after Abner Sprague, an early settler who established a homestead and resort in the area in 1874. Sprague even dammed the lake to improve fishing for his guests. The area became part of the national park in 1915. The Sprague Lake loop trail is an easy, 0.9-mile path that circles the entire lake. The trail is mostly flat with a hard-packed gravel surface, making it wheelchair accessible and suitable for all ages and abilities. Along the way, numerous benches provide opportunities to relax and soak in the panoramic views of Half Mountain, Thatchtop Mountain, Taylor Peak, Otis Peak, Hallett Peak, Flattop Mountain, and Notchtop Mountain. Early mornings often provide mirror-like reflections of the mountains in the lake's calm waters. Sprague Lake is a popular spot for picnics, with tables and grills available near the parking area. Fishing is another common activity, with brook, brown, and rainbow trout inhabiting the lake. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as moose and beavers, especially in the early morning.
