Discover more about Starr Kempf's Kinetic Sculptures

Nestled in a residential area at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, Starr Kempf's Kinetic Sculptures presents a unique and captivating outdoor art experience. The sculptures, created by the late Starr Kempf, are designed to interact with the wind, resulting in mesmerizing movements. Kempf, who began creating these elaborate steel structures in the late 1970s, dedicated up to three years to constructing each piece. Kempf's sculptures often take the form of birds or weather vanes, standing 30 to 50 feet tall. The artist's vision was to create pieces that exhibit graceful movement and interaction with the landscape. Although originally there were more sculptures, some were removed due to zoning issues and neighborhood opposition. However, several remain, continuing to delight visitors with their whimsical charm. Starr Kempf (1917-1995) was an American sculptor, architect, and artist. Raised on an Ohio farm, he learned craftsmanship and engineering from his father and uncles. He served in the Air Force during WWII and later created a metal foundry. His kinetic wind sculptures gained international attention, becoming a beloved, yet sometimes controversial, landmark in Colorado Springs. The sculptures still standing offer a glimpse into Kempf's artistic vision and his ability to blend art and engineering.
