Discover more about Historic Elitch Carousel Dome

The Historic Elitch Carousel Dome marks the original location of Elitch Gardens, a beloved Denver amusement park that operated for over a century. Founded in 1890 as Elitch's Zoological Gardens by John and Mary Elitch, it was initially known for its exotic animals and botanical gardens. Over time, it evolved into a popular amusement park, featuring rides like the Twister roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, and the iconic carousel. The carousel, built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) between 1925 and 1928, is known as PTC #51. This wooden carousel features 67 horses, including 44 jumping horses and two Roman chariots. The dome that houses the carousel is a remnant of the original Elitch Gardens, which moved to downtown Denver in 1994. Today, the Historic Elitch Carousel Dome serves as a venue for community events and concerts, preserving a piece of Denver's past for future generations. The adjacent Elitch Theatre, built in 1891, further enriches the historical significance of the site, having hosted numerous famous stars over the years. Visitors can explore the charming architecture of the dome and appreciate the history of Elitch Gardens, which was a significant entertainment destination for families for many years. While the amusement park has moved, the Carousel Dome remains a nostalgic reminder of Denver's rich heritage.
