Mueller State Park: A Rocky Mountain Escape

Mueller State Park, nestled in the western foothills of Pikes Peak near Divide, Colorado, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Encompassing 5,121 acres, the park boasts a diverse landscape ranging from spring-fed meadows and dense forests of aspen and conifers to striking rock outcroppings. Originally a Ute hunting ground, the area was later settled by ranchers and farmers during the Pikes Peak and Cripple Creek gold rushes. W.E. Mueller assembled several ranches into a gaming preserve, which was then acquired by the Nature Conservancy and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to establish the state park in 1988. Today, Mueller State Park is the second most visited park in Colorado, offering a wide array of activities throughout the year. With over 55 miles of trails, hikers, bikers, and horseback riders can explore the park's diverse terrain. Popular trails include the School Pond Loop, Peak View Campground Loop, and Cheesman Ranch Loop, offering varying levels of difficulty and scenic views. In winter, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding. The park is also a prime location for wildlife viewing, home to elk, mule deer, black bears, bighorn sheep, hawks, and various bird species. The diverse habitats support a wide range of plant life, from native grasses and wildflowers to stands of spruce, fir, pine, and aspen. Camping is available year-round with 132 campsites, including walk-in tent sites and RV sites with electric hookups. For a more comfortable stay, three cabins are available for rent.
