Chatfield State Park, a sprawling oasis in the Denver metropolitan area, offers a diverse range of recreational activities and natural beauty. Centered around the 1,423-acre Chatfield Reservoir, the park provides a haven for boaters, anglers, and water sports enthusiasts. The park's history is intertwined with the need for flood control in the region. Following a devastating flood in 1965, the Chatfield Dam and Reservoir were constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers, completed in 1975. The park is named after Edward Livingston Chatfield, a Union Army veteran and Littleton city leader. Today, Chatfield State Park stands as a testament to balancing preservation and progress, offering a space for recreation and a refuge for local wildlife. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities throughout the year. In the warmer months, the reservoir comes alive with boating, jet skiing, paddle boarding, and swimming at the designated swim beach. Anglers can cast their lines for trout, bass, and other fish species. The park also features 26 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, catering to all skill levels. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, providing scenic spots for gatherings.
