Discover more about Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun

The Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, completed in 1937, stands as a testament to the vision of Spencer Penrose and a tribute to the celebrated humorist Will Rogers. Penrose, a prominent figure in Colorado Springs' history, commissioned the shrine as a memorial to himself and his wife, Julie. Following Rogers' untimely death in a plane crash in 1935, Penrose dedicated the shrine to his friend, ensuring his legacy would live on in this iconic landmark. Constructed from Cheyenne Mountain granite, the 100-foot tower is a marvel of engineering, assembled without wood or nails, held together by steel and cement. Inside, visitors can explore multiple levels, viewing photographs and exhibits detailing the lives of Will Rogers and the Penroses. A highlight is the 340-square-foot mural by Randall Davey, depicting the history of the Pikes Peak region. The shrine also features a sophisticated instrument that chimes every quarter hour and plays musical programs. At an elevation of approximately 8,136 feet, the shrine offers panoramic views of Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak region, and the eastern plains. The site includes the chapel where Spencer and Julie Penrose are entombed, adorned with 15th and 16th-century religious relics. Access to the shrine is through Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, adding to the experience.
