Discover more about Butler-McCook House & Garden

The Butler-McCook House & Garden, located in downtown Hartford, stands as a unique time capsule, showcasing nearly two centuries of history through the eyes of one family. Built in 1782 by Dr. Daniel Butler, it remained home to four generations of the Butler and McCook families until it was converted into a museum. The house is one of the few surviving 18th-century structures in Hartford. Inside, visitors can explore original furnishings ranging from Connecticut-crafted colonial furniture to Victorian-era toys and paintings, and even samurai armor acquired during a family trip to Japan. The Main Street History Center, housed within the building, uses the Butler and McCook families' experiences to chronicle the neighborhood's transformation. Behind the house lies a restored Victorian ornamental garden, originally designed in 1865 by landscape architect Jacob Weidenmann, who also designed Hartford's Bushnell Park. The garden features a formal parterre with boxwood hedges, roses, perennials, and annuals. The West Hartford Garden Club lovingly maintains the garden. The McCook family had a strong tradition of military service. They were known as the “Fighting McCooks” during the Civil War, and family members served in various high-ranking military and political positions.
