Fort Nathan Hale, located on the eastern shore of New Haven Harbor, is a 20-acre city park with a rich military history. The site, also known as Fort Hale Park and Black Rock, features the remains of three distinct fortifications spanning the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Originally constructed as Black Rock Fort in 1776 to protect New Haven harbor from the British, it was captured in 1779. Rebuilt and renamed Fort Nathan Hale, it played a role in the War of 1812. During the Civil War, it was again updated with earthen ramparts and bomb-proof bunkers, though it saw no action. The fort was deeded to the city in 1921 and became a park. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed Black Rock Fort and the partially restored Civil War-era Fort Nathan Hale. The park offers interpretive signage, walking trails, a playground, and a pier for fishing. It's a place where history and recreation meet, offering stunning views of Long Island Sound.
