Discover more about Te Rua Manga (The Needle)

Te Rua Manga (The Needle) is one of Rarotonga's most iconic natural landmarks. This towering rock formation is not only a geological marvel but also holds deep cultural significance. According to local folklore, the Needle was formed when the great god Tangaroa thrust a spear into the earth, creating this distinctive spire. The hike to the base of the Needle is a rewarding experience, offering stunning panoramic views of Rarotonga and the surrounding ocean. The trail is approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) each way and is considered moderately challenging due to its steep ascent and uneven terrain. Good footwear is essential, and caution is advised, especially after rain when the trail can become slippery. Along the way, hikers will be immersed in lush vegetation and encounter unique rock formations. The summit provides breathtaking vistas of the island and lagoon, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers. The best time to hike is during the cooler, drier months of May to October, and it's recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. While a guide isn't necessary for experienced hikers, it's always wise to let someone know your plans and be prepared for a challenging but ultimately rewarding trek.
