Discover more about El Choyin

El Choyin, also known as Rio Chollin, is a hidden gem among the many attractions near La Fortuna, Costa Rica. This natural hot spring is a section of the river heated by the geothermal activity of the Arenal Volcano. Unlike the developed and often pricey hot spring resorts in the area, El Choyin offers a free and authentic experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the region's natural beauty without the hefty price tag. The hot spring is located approximately 12 kilometers outside of La Fortuna, along Route 142, on the boundary of Arenal Volcano National Park. The entrance is somewhat hidden, marked by a dirt trail leading into the forest. The path is a short walk downhill, passing through a broken metal fence, which adds to the adventurous feel. Once you reach the river, you'll find the naturally heated waters provide a soothing and therapeutic experience. The temperature is warm enough to relax your muscles without being scalding hot, making it ideal for unwinding after a day of hiking or exploring the nearby Arenal Volcano National Park. The river winds through the lush rainforest, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. El Choyin has gained popularity, and as such, it can get crowded, especially during peak hours. For a more secluded experience, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the evening. Keep in mind that because this is a natural, unregulated area, there are no changing rooms or facilities available. Recently, an official hot spring section called Choyin Rio Thermal has been developed across the street from the free area. This paid section offers amenities such as secure parking, lockers, changing rooms, and a cafeteria, providing a more secure and comfortable experience for a fee.
