What began as a family banana farm in 1974 has transformed into a haven for conservation, protecting nearly 1200 hectares of primary forest and 200 hectares of secondary forest. In 1994, the Stein family decided to dedicate two-thirds of their farm as a private biological reserve and built the lodge as an alternative source of income. Selva Bananito Lodge offers a unique experience, intentionally designed to be free from the distractions of modern life. There is no electricity in the lodge, creating a tranquil atmosphere in tune with nature. Instead, the lodge uses solar-heated water and relies on candlelight for evening ambiance. Guests can enjoy a variety of activities, including guided hikes, birdwatching tours, horseback riding, and rappelling down waterfalls. The lodge also actively involves guests in its conservation efforts, offering opportunities to plant trees and learn about the local ecosystem. The lodge's commitment extends to the local community, employing local staff and supporting nearby schools through environmental workshops. Selva Bananito also implements various waste management practices, including recycling, composting, and wastewater purification using bacteria, enzymes, and water lilies.
