Discover more about Antigua Capitanía de Puerto

Located in the heart of Limón, the Antigua Capitanía de Puerto is a significant historical building that reflects the city's strong ties to the sea. Constructed in the 1930s by the United Fruit Company (UFCO), the building initially housed administrative offices and the residence of the Port Captain, along with offices for a doctor and an engineer. The building's design, with its 'L' shape bordering an internal courtyard, is representative of Caribbean urban architecture. The structure was built using imported pinotea wood and features simple ornamental elements like balustrades and moldings. The building served as the Capitanía de Puerto until 1986 when it was moved to the Public Works and Transportation Ministry due to its deteriorating condition. In 2014, the building was restored with contributions from the Cultural Heritage Investigation and Conservation Center of the Ministry of Culture and Youth. Today, the Antigua Capitanía de Puerto houses offices of the Municipality of Limón. It is an integral part of the urban landscape, along with Balvanero Vargas Park and the former Municipal Council building. The building was declared a Historical Architectural Heritage site on June 26, 1995. Visitors can explore the building's architecture and appreciate its role in the development of the area. The surrounding area offers local shops and eateries where visitors can enjoy traditional Costa Rican cuisine.
