Limon International Airport (LIO), also known as Aeropuerto Internacional de Limón, is one of Costa Rica's four international airports. Despite its designation, it currently handles only domestic passenger flights. The airport is located a few kilometers south of Puerto Limón, making it the ideal starting point for exploring Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Reopened in 2006 after being closed for nearly 20 years, the airport aimed to boost tourism to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. In 2003-2004, the airport received an upgrade with a paved runway. SANSA Airlines offers daily flights to and from San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport. Limon Airport provides access to destinations such as Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, and Tortuguero. These towns and indigenous communities are within a two-hour radius of the airport.
